'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' release date, spoilers: R2-D2 to be reunited with Luke Skywalker?

After a complicated past drove him to isolation, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is making a comeback onscreen for the newest installment in the "Star Wars" series.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" follows the events of the first sequel titled, "The Force Awakens." With a lot left of to explain about why Luke chose to retreat instead of stay to make his mistakes right, fans are afraid that he might not even make it to the central part of the story.

The director of "The Last Jedi" Rian Johnson had much to say about the matter all the while avoiding giving out too much details lest it ruins the anticipation of the fans for the newest installment of the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy. When asked about whether or not the film will explain any of Luke's actions, Johnson revealed that that's exactly what the movie is made to do.

"Figuring out where his head was at was the very first thing I had to do when writing the movie. I had to crack this. And it had to be something for me that first and foremost made sense. Why did Luke Skywalker go off to this island?" Johnson says, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "That was the starting point, and that's what the entire movie explores."

"The Last Jedi" is also about to return a sidelined character back into the middle of things. Although Johnson had an initial plan about what to do for the characters after "The Force Awakens," he had seen the script and realized where the writers actually wanted to go with the storyline. And Johnson stepped in to request the much-loved R2-D2 to accompany Rey (Daisy Ridley) instead of BB-8. Fans have no need to worry, though. BB-8 will still be integral to the film but it looks like Johnson has a plan of reuniting R2-D2 with his original master, Luke.

Late last year, Carrie Fisher was taken away from the world by a heart attack. As a result, many fans speculated on her demise in "The Last Jedi." Fortunately, according to Daily News, this was the last film Fisher worked on. Although that means that there will be certain changes for "Episode IX," fans are treated to a universe where Fisher is still the amazing and very much alive Leia.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" will premiere worldwide on Dec. 15.
