'Spider-Man' movie reboot: Andrew Garfield fought for Spider-Man character to rejoin Marvel

Spider Man is set to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut next year, making his first appearance on "Captain America: Civil War." And while Andrew Garfield won't be reprising his role as the famous web-slinger, the actor said that he has always wanted the character to reconnect with his Marvel roots.

Speaking to Uproxx, Garfield said, "I've been petitioning to hook up with Marvel since the beginning, so I'm really glad they're finally doing it."

The actor starred as Peter Parker in 2012's "The Amazing Spider-Man" and its 2014 sequel, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." When asked if he was ever in talks with Marvel to reprise the role, that turned out to be a sensitive subject for Garfield as he said that "what happened is a tender conversation that maybe I don't want to talk about in public in a press situation."

"But all I can say is that I'm stoked to go and watch a Marvel film of Spider-Man," he said.

Back in June, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced that Tom Holland was chosen to play the role of Spider-Man in the Marvel movies. The 19-year-old actor is the third to play the role, following Tobey Maguire and Garfield in the previous movies.

Jon Watts, who was tasked to direct the next solo "Spider-Man" films, said in an interview with the Toronto Sun that Holland met his expectations of what Peter Parker/ Spider-Man should be. The director said that the actor had the right age, the "right level of enthusiasm and a little bit of confidence" mixed in with a lot of insecurity. It also helped that Holland can do some of the physical aspects of the role.

"On top of nailing his character, he can also do a standing backflip," said Watts.

And while Garfield won't be portraying the superhero anymore, he is grateful for having been given the chance to portray the character and is looking forward to seeing the new Spider-Man in future films.

"I'm really, really grateful for the whole ride of it," he told Uproxx, "And I'm really excited for the next one."

The new Spider-Man will make his debut in "Captain America: Civil War" on May 6, 2016 and will star in his first solo film on July 28, 2017.
