SNES Classic sales news: Nintendo sold more than two million units in a month

For those that still question the commercial viability of nostalgia, one only has to look at Nintendo to verify.

Nintendo has reached the two-million mark in consoles sold since dropping the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) Classic Edition in North America and Europe last September.

According to Eurogamer, there have been more than two million SNES mini consoles that were purchased, specifically more than 370,000 units were sold in Japan in the span of half a week.

The SNES Classic, like its predecessor, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) Classic, holds a lot of vintage games in a single, small box that connects to any standard HD TV just by using an HDMI cord. Rather than using SNES game carts, every game is ready to start with one press of a button. Even the aesthetic of the box builds on nostalgia, making it an almost exact replica of the original SNES.

Selling two million units of a retro video game console before the start of the holiday season is a strong indicator of Nintendo's dominance in the market, considering that the Nintendo Switch is also doing well in terms of units sold and the recent launch of "Super Mario Odyssey" sold two million copies in its opening week.

What's interesting to note is not the fact that Nintendo managed to sell two million units of the SNES Classic but how quickly they managed to produce it. It seems that Nintendo has learned its lesson when the NES Classic was launched last year and consumers had a hard time finding stocks. With that experience, Nintendo promised that there will be more SNES Classics coming in the next months.

The Nintendo SNES Classic is currently available in Europe, Japan and North America.
