Selena Gomez has been busy working on new music lately and is enjoying the single life after splitting from DJ Zedd. But last week, former One Direction band member Zayn Malik started following her on Twitter after his split from fiancée Perrie Edwards, and many fans immediately thought that Malik might be eyeing the singer-actress as a possible girlfriend.

In an interview with the BBC's Chris Stark and Scott Mills, Gomez was asked how it feels to have Malik as a fan.

"I had no idea what that was until somebody else asked me," the 23-year-old singer said, but she added that she knows the former boy band member, so having him as her Twitter follower is "not like a weird thing."

The former Disney star then gave Malik a shout out, saying, "Thanks for the follow, Zayn!"

Following his split from Edwards, Malik appears to have taken an interest in social media as he liked one of Kylie Jenner's Twitter pictures. His actions immediately outraged fans as they said that what he did was an insult to Edwards. Many also speculated that Malik might be interested in dating Jenner as he has only favorited 10 tweets since joining the social media site.

Meanwhile, fans have been on the lookout for Gomez's new love interest after her split from Zedd last April. Last month, she was rumored to be dating pop singer Cody Simpson, who is model Gigi Hadid's ex. However, it appears that the two only spent time to write a song together called "Roll 'Em Up" before ultimately giving it to Simpson's sister Alli, who told Teen Vogue that Gomez got "teary" after she heard Alli's vocals.

"She was excited over the fact that it was passed down to me, because her and Cody had worked on it for months and months," said the 17-year-old Simpson.
