'Red Dead Redemption 2' release date news: Leaked images meant for a different PC MMO

"Red Dead Redemption 2" to release in Q3 or Q4 of 2017 Twitter/RockstarRDR

Fans of "Red Dead Redemption" were taken by storm when a leaked image appeared to be a teaser of the upcoming "Red Dead Redemption 2." But it turns out the image is taken from a completely different game after all.

But according to a report from PC Gamer, the image posted on the GTAforums is actually a screenshot for an upcoming PC MMO game titled "Wild West Online." According to creative vice president Stephan Bugaj from game publisher DJ2, the new game is more than just a "Red Dead Redemption" copycat.

"So we wanted to make this big, open Wild West world with a bit of a twist that, like the best MMOs, is a place where people can really live in." Bugaj stated. "There's going to be story, character, and gameplay-driven motives to keep playing, but we haven't yet fully worked out what the progression system is going to be for that."

The report also mentions that the upcoming PC MMO game will have the same law system featured in "Red Dead Redemption" universe. This means players who will be proven to have committed crimes will receive the wanted star tags. They will also become the targets for players who take on the roles of either deputies or bounty hunters.

The upcoming MMO game will also have a gang system that could provoke some rivalries within the game.

Meanwhile, Rockstar Games has yet to reveal more details about the sequel of the Western-themed open-world action-adventure game that first came out in 2010.

The development of "Red Dead Redemption 2" was first announced in October 2016 after a series of teasers was posted by the game developer on social media sites. Then, on Oct. 20, Rockstar released the game's first trailer.

The game is expected to be released sometime in Q3 or Q4 of 2017.
