'Outlander' news: Caitriona Balfe wins at People's Choice Awards

"Outlander" has captured the hearts of viewers and it was evident when the show won at the 2016 People's Choice Awards.

The series won in the Favorite Cable Sci-Fi/ Fantasy TV Show category, beating hit shows "The Walking Dead" and "Game of Thrones." Caitriona Balfe was also recognized for her portrayal of Claire and won the award for Favorite Sci-Fi/ Fantasy TV Actress category. Balfe competed against Emilia Clarke ("Game of Thrones"), "Once Upon a Time" stars Ginnifer Goodwin and Jennifer Morrison, and Lady Gaga ("American Horror Story: Hotel").

Balfe was not at the awards ceremony but the actress took to Twitter to explain her absence, saying, "I know a lot of you were asking and I'm sorry to say I can't attend People's Choice tonight as I have work commitments…"

Two hours later,Balfe took to the micro-blogging site again and wrote, "Ahhhhhhh. You guys are so amazing!!! Thank you all for voting…I am so grateful."

Last year, Balfe won a Saturn Award for Best Actress on Television. She also got a Golden Globe nod as Best Actress in a Television Drama Series.

While the cast and crew of "Outlander" are celebrating their triumph, fans are waiting for more show updates as a premiere date for season 2 has yet to be announced.

On Wednesday, the show's Twitter account announced that Balfe and Sam Heughan will be talking to Entertainment Tonight's Leanne Aguilera. The interview willl be livestreamed on ET's Facebook account on January 7 at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Meanwhile, it appears that some reporters have already been invited to a special screening of the season 2 premiere.

E! reporter Kristin Dos Santos tweeted that the premiere "is fantastic!"

"#Outlander fans, no spoilers but the 2nd season premiere is fantastic!" Dos Santos wrote. "I'm talking to Sam, Cat, [executive producer Ronald D. Moore] & Diana [Gabaldon] on Friday."

"Outlander" season 2 is expected to premiere in spring 2016.
