"New Girl" fans have witnessed Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick's (Jake Johnson) complicated relationship throughout the show's four seasons as the two started out as friends before they started dating, breaking up and making up, and finally deciding to be friends again.

During the season 4 finale, Nick decided to end things once and for all with a clean break by telling Jess that he never once thought about being intimate with her again after their breakup, so this could mean that the two will just be friends when the Fox show returns for its fifth season.

Speaking to Vogue magazine, Johnson said that he and Deschanel knew that their characters' relationship wasn't working when they were always fighting with each other.

"They were always standing across from each other in some absurd argument. And we were, like, this is kind of spoiling something that's nice between these two characters," he said.

The actor added that the writers may have realized that a romantic relationship was not the way to go for Jess and Nick, and that everyone appeared to be relieved that the two are back to being friends.

As for season five, Johnson said that he is "excited" for the upcoming season and that he likes it best when they film comedic scenes.

"I love when the show's funny. I don't necessarily love the melodrama of television at times," he said.

Aside from Nick and Jess' storyline, the season 4 finale had other great moments, such as Cece and Schmidt getting back together, so there's a chance that the two could make a big step in their relationship when the show returns. But it was also bittersweet as the cast had to say goodbye once again to Coach, played by Damon Wayans Jr., who left the show for the second time around.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Wayans was part of the show's pilot but had to leave due to his role on the ABC show "Happy Endings." He reprised his role as Coach on "New Girl" season 3 as a guest star before being promoted to cast regular in the fourth season.

A premiere date for "New Girl" season 5 has yet to be announced.
