As summer continues, it's a good idea to escape from the blazing heat every now and then and sit back and relax with a good movie or TV show in the comforts of home. Now that some old favorites are expiring from Netflix, a fresh crop of new titles are making their way to the streaming service next month, with some movies that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
Among the films coming to Netflix is Tyler Perry's "Meet the Browns," which tells the story of a single mom (Angela Bassett) taking her family to Georgia for the funeral of her father — a man she never met. There, her clan is introduced to the crass, fun-loving Brown family. Perry reprises his role as the feisty Madea.
Another film worth watching is 2013's "As Cool As I Am" starring Claire Danes and James Marsden. Based on the novel of the same name by Pete Fromm, it's about a smart teenage girl who comes of age in a small town with her self-centered parents who had her when they were still teenagers.
For a lot of laughs, there's the "Fred" movie trilogy, which premiered on children's TV channel Nickelodeon. "Fred: The Movie," "Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred," and "Fred 3: Camp Fred" are based on the adventures of Fred Frigglehorn, a fictional character created and played by Lucas Cruikshank for his YouTube channel. In all three films, Cruikshank plays Fred, and his parents are played by Siobhan Fallon Hogan and WWE Superstar John Cena.
As for new TV shows, season 8 of "Doctor Who" is also coming to Netflix starting Aug. 8, and fans who missed a few episodes of the show last year or those who simply want to rewatch the whole season can get caught up with the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and his companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) before season 9 starts airing on Sept. 19.
