Marvel is looking to diversify its roster of artists and writers, as the comic book and movie company is now compelling both types of creatives from all over the world to apply at the studio.
This was one of the first policies of the newly appointed Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of Marvel, C.B. Cebulski, who was just two months into his new job. Cebulski admitted that he grew up "internationally," meaning he was aware of the cultures and traditions of multiple countries due to his family and relatives being in different countries. He reportedly usually spent a lot of summers abroad either in Sweden, Finland, Belgium, or Greece.
The 46-year-old EIC was also in Asia during most of his college life, making him a well-travelled individual. During most of his childhood and adolescence, he spent a lot of time reading Marvel comics in different languages. Because of this, he claimed to know what styles would work best in a certain culture or race based on his experiences.
With this in minds, Cebulski wants to impart this sort of mentality towards the whole of Marvel, where not only are some of the talent going to come internationally but the stories and the settings as well. This could mean that future Marvel movies and comic books may take somewhere that is not the US.
"I think the same thing is gonna continue now that I'm EIC. The international representation from the Marvel Universe starts at home and expands outward. And what I wanna do is bring more of the actual authentic international voices into the Marvel Universe as a base. Some things we've been doing in Japan and China and Korea in developing original Marvel stories are set in actual continuity in those countries," according to Cebulski in an interview.
With that said, artists and writers from all over the world, especially those with a growing Marvel fanbase, can apply for a job at the studio. They only need to email Cebulski since he himself stated that his inbox for cbcebulski@marvel.com is open.
