'GTA Online' update news: 'GTA V' multiplayer component hits 90 million copies sold

"Grand Theft Auto Online" ("GTA Online") has stolen one of the top spots for this year's most successful games, as the multiplayer component for "GTA V" has reached a new milestone of 90 million copies sold.

Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive, publisher and developer, respectively, of "GTA V" and "GTA Online" have announced that the game sales figure consisted of both the physical retail store sales as well as the digital copies on platforms like Steam and others. This led Take-Two to claim that "GTA Online" has quite an impressive longevity for a game since it was first released back in 2013 and is still going strong up to this day.

Apart from the sales milestone, "GTA Online" has also become the third best-selling game in the United States in 2017 in terms of copies, while it was sixth in terms of revenue generated. This makes "GTA Online" the biggest contributor to the companies' income despite other big AAA titles like "NBA 2K18" and "WWE 2K18."

Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick said that "Our stellar results were highlighted by record recurrent consumer spending on both Grand Theft Auto Online and NBA 2K18, robust ongoing sales of Grand Theft Auto V, and the successful launch of WWE 2K18." By "recurrent," Zelnick meant people who already had a physical copy of the game and still bought a digital copy.

Zelnick is also positive that the hype for "GTA Online" in 2018 will not die down and will continue to rake in quite a lot of sales and bigger milestones. Take-Two interactive still has big plans for "GTA Online" and will continue to introduce lots of new content to the game which is sure to prolong player engagement. The best part is that each new content they will be adding is free for those who have purchased the game.

As such, Take-Two is now focusing on delivering more quality content for "GTA Online" and will try harder to make things right for the game.
