'Gravity Falls' season 3 renewal not happening; creator developing new animated show

The adventures of twins Mabel and Dipper Pines are coming to an end as "Gravity Falls" is set to end after two seasons on the Disney Channel. The show, which has gained an avid following of children and adults, is slated to air its final episode next month.

While fans are still hoping for a season 3 renewal, it appears that chances are slim for a new season as show creator Alex Hirsch is moving on to a new project with another network.

According to Variety, Hirsch has set a deal for a script and presentation pilot for Fox and 20th Century Fox TV. Details of the new show are being kept under wraps, but Hirsch told the website, "I'm cooking up some brand new weirdness."
Hirsch himself confirmed the news via Twitter on Wednesday, Jan. 6.

"The rumors are true!" Hirsch wrote. "I'm cooking up some new strange projects for some new strange places. 2016 is gonna be a crazy year buddies."

Hirsch has reportedly been pursued by numerous networks for development projects after the success of "Gravity Falls." But Fox seems to be a good fit for the show creator as the network has a track record of success with its other animated shows such as "Family Guy," "American Dad," "Bob's Burgers," and the longest-running animated series in history, "The Simpsons."

Back in November, the show creator announced that "Gravity Falls" will be ending its 40-episode run in a lengthy post on Tumblr. In his post, Hirsch explained that the show "isn't being cancelled—it's being finished."

"This is 100% my choice, and it's something I decided on a very long time ago. I always designed 'Gravity Falls' to be a finite series about one epic summer- a series with a beginning, middle, and end," Hirsch explained. The show creator also said that there are no plans to create another full season of the show and that he is "for now, personally done" telling the Pines family's stories.

"Gravity Falls" ends with an hour-long episode titled "Weirdmageddon III," which will air on Feb. 15 on the Disney Channel.
