The 2016 awards season kicks off with the Golden Globe Awards, which is just a few days away. Ricky Gervais is returning to host the ceremony, and this is the fourth time that he has done so following a consecutive run from 2010 to 2012.

Gervais took to Twitter last week to apologize in advance for his jokes as he wrote, "Because I can see the future, I'd like to apologise now for the things I said at next week's Golden Globes."

On Monday, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced via Twitter that Mel Gibson, as well as Olivia Wilde, will be presenting at this year's ceremony.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Gibson himself won a Golden Globe for directing "Braveheart" in 1996 and was nominated for Best Actor in 1997 for "Ransom" and in 2001 for "What Women Want."

The nominees for this year's awards include a mix of award show veterans and some new faces for the best actor and best actress awards. Award show favorite Cate Blanchett has been nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama for her performance in "Carol," and the actress will be competing with Saoirse Ronan ("Brooklyn) as well as first-time nominees Brie Larson ("Room"), Rooney Mara ("Carol"), and Alicia Vikander ("The Danish Girl").

All eyes will also be on Leonardo DiCaprio as the two-time Golden Globe winner will be vying for a Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama award along with Bryan Cranston ("Trumbo"), Michael Fassbender ("Steve Jobs"), Eddie Redmayne ("The Danish Girl") and Will Smith ("Concussion").

Golden Globe and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence got a nod this year for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy award for her performance in "Joy," and the 25-year-old will be competing with Melissa McCarthy ("Spy"), Amy Schumer ("Trainwreck"), Maggie Smith ("The Lady in the Van"), and Lily Tomlin ("Grandma").
