The follow-up to "Frozen" is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated sequels in recent memory, and it's something that the filmmakers are spending a lot of time on as they know that the first film is a tough act to follow. Since it was announced earlier this year that "Frozen 2" is in the works, not much has been said about the upcoming film, but in a new interview, director Christopher Buck confirmed that the project is in its early stages and that he and co-director Jennifer Lee are getting back into the story room together and "throwing things around."
Speaking to MTV News at a special screening of the Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Collection on Sunday, Aug. 9, Buck said that he and Lee are "just starting" to work on the film.
"We have an overall idea, a concept, which I think is a very strong one. I'm very excited about doing it," he said.
Buck admitted that they were overwhelmed by the success of the 2013 animated film and that it took them a while to start working on the upcoming film, which they only started thinking about while working on the short, "Frozen Fever," which was screened alongside "Cinderella."
"Frozen" became a global phenomenon in 2013 when it accumulated nearly $1.3 billion in revenue worldwide and gained positive reviews from critics and audiences. It is currently the highest-grossing animated film of all time, and it won two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for "Let it Go."
Many critics thought that the film's appeal lies in its strong female characters — sisters Princess Anna (Kristen Bell) and Queen Elsa (Idina Menzel) — and the fact that they are very relatable. For "Frozen 2," Buck said that fans will get to see more of Elsa's personality and that she will get to "lighten up," as compared to the first film where Elsa was initially scared of her powers before Anna helped her to wholeheartedly embrace it.
For the next movie, Buck said that he and Lee will continue to show the two as strong characters.
"We will keep that going in the next one. We will tackle other issues that, I think, are out there today that boys and girls, men and women, are dealing with," he continued.
No premiere date has been announced for "Frozen 2" as of the moment.
