Jodie Whittaker will be playing the first female Doctor. The Thirteenth Doctor will also be joined by three new companions for the eleventh season of "Doctor Who."

BBC made the announcement that Whittaker's Doctor will have three new companions for the eleventh season. Graham, played by Bradley Walsh, Ryan, played by Tosin Cole, and Yasmin, played by Mandip Gill will serve as the new Doctor's friends. Sharon D. Clarke will also be joining the series in a returning role.

"The new Doctor is going to need new friends," said new showrunner Chris Chibnall, who previously worked on "Broadchurch." He is replacing Stephen Moffat who stepped in for Russell T. Davies back in 2010.

Having more than one companion is not new to the Doctor or the show in general. Peter Capaldi who was the Twelfth Doctor has two companions: Bill, played by Pearl Mackie, and Nardole, played by Matt Lucas. The Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith also had two companions in Amy, played by Karen Gillan, and Rory, Arthur Darvill.

More companions alongside the Doctor means more room for witty banter and funny bickering. It will also be a refreshing sight to see a mix of male and female companions with different ages and races for the Doctor. The show's varied fan base will surely be able to relate and identify with any of the companions in the coming adventures of the Doctor.

Alongside the new companions, the long-running sci-fi show is also going with an all-new feel by having a different interior design for the TARDIS.

Season 11 of "Doctor Who" will begin in the fall of 2018 with a one-hour premiere episode. The new season will only have 10 episodes with each episode running to 50 minutes which will be slightly shorter than previous episodes. These changes could help the show create a better flow of telling their stories that have cemented "Doctor Who" as an institution.
