Doctor Doom news: 'Rogue One' actor wants to play the Marvel supervillain

Doctor Doom as he appears in the Marvel comic books Marvel

Ben Mendelsohn, who plays the sinister Director Krennic in "Rogue One," is now ready to play as a doctor, though not in a healthy way, as he wants to be "Fantastic Four's" Doctor Doom, one of the most powerful Marvel villains.

The 48-year-old Australian actor has revealed an interest in playing one of the most popular comic book villains of all time, Victor Von Doom a.k.a. Doctor Doom of the Marvel universe. It is also rumored that Mendelsohn will be playing the alien Skrull commander in the upcoming "Captain Marvel" movie starring Brie Larson and Jude Law as the main protagonists.

Although already cast as a villain in a movie, the Australian actor still wants the role of Doctor Doom, should he appear in a Marvel movie in the near future. As of now though, there are no reported Marvel movies that will include Doctor Doom. This is likely because his past appearances in the two "Fantastic Four" films of the past did not do the character justice. A lot of fans agreed that his portrayal was lacking, especially for someone with a notorious depiction in the Marvel comics.

Mendelsohn expressed that he understands Doom, which is one of the reasons why he wishes to play the character. The actor further added, "Doctor Doom is the greatest comic character of all time. That's a great role. The thing that's appealing about Victor is the damage and trauma, the loss of the family, the wrong was done to him and then the takeover, the revenge, and then the protectiveness of Latveria wrapped in that Cold War vibe. There's something about the combination of that. What actually makes him great is his caring bit."

Doom's origins is one of tragedy and vengeance. As a boy, his mother was killed by the demon Mephisto due to a bargain. His father fled the demon with him but later died because of the harsh cold. Afterwards, Doom vowed to become a master of both science and magic to get revenge against Mephisto. In the process, he also became a sworn enemy of Marvel's Fantastic Four, as well as some of the Avengers.

At the moment, there is no plan for a Doctor Doom character in any Marvel movie or show, so fans and Mendelsohn might have to wait indefinitely before the charismatic supervillain is given justice in film.
