Fans of Pikachu better get ready for a shocking new revelation, as a new trailer has been released for the upcoming western version of the "Detective Pikachu" video game.
This time around, Pikcahu will be the one choosing who is which, though fans are somewhat still stuck at processing the beloved Pokémon's voice in the trailer. In the Japanese version of the game that was released quite a few years back, Pikachu as a detective was voiced by a middle-aged Japanese man fitting of an investigator — this is why lots of fans petitioned the actor Danny DeVito as the voice actor for the western version.
Sadly, it was not DeVito who got the voice actor role, but someone else, and he also gave Pikachu an unsettling gruff and manly voice. So much so that some fans just couldn't get their heads wrapped around the idea. It also seems that the casting and stylistic choice for Detective Pikachu's voice went too over-the-top and became quite disturbing to the point of even being comedic.
It seems the "detective" part was quite overdone, making it seem too bizarre for someone like Pikachu. This was also quite disappointing for some since the Hollywood movie adaptation for "Detective Pikachu" saw "Deadpool" star Ryan Reynolds as the voice for Pikachu. Reynold does have a softer voice compared to whoever voiced "Detective Pikachu" in the western game version, so it might be arguably better.
Still, the trailer only presented snippets of what the whole game might be like, and for all fans know, the voice pitch or tone could still vary during gameplay, meaning fans who do not like it might want to hold off on their reactions until official reviews for the game are out.
For those unfamiliar with the game, "Detective Pikachu" was first released in Japan back in 2016 for the Nintendo 3DS. The reason why it took so long for a western version to be released was that the game is story- and dialogue-heavy and had to require a good translation effort. Most of these dialogues also had fully voiced actors, adding to the production time. The wait will finally be over though come March 23 for western fans who own a 3DS.
