A new king of Ethereum cryptocurrency mining has been crown, and this time, NVIDIA takes the spotlight instead of its rival, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), as the new NVIDIA Tesla V100 video card is the most powerful cryptocurrency mining component right now.
That said, miners wanting to maximize their yields may not be able to afford it since it costs a staggering $8,000 at the moment. Also, the card was never intended for any other use than running workstations and servers, for AI and deep learning workloads, but that does not mean it cannot excel in mining, gaming, or multimedia tasks.
Because of this, some people had to test the capability of the Tesla V100 graphics processing unit (GPU), and this time, it was tested for its Ethereum yields. BuriedONE Cryptomining website has done the honors of benchmarking the Tesla V100 against some Ethereum mining tests, and the results were higher than any single GPU has achieved before at a rate of 94MH/s.
This is more than double the capability of the $1,200 GPU NVIDIA Titan Xp, which can only do 40-42MH/s and more affordable the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64, which can reach 38-42MH/s. However, with the current price of the Tesla V100, this comes as no surprise.
Given how robust its Ethereum mining capabilities are, some PC enthusiasts can assume that the Tesla V100 will also be able to perform approximately twice as powerful in gaming and synthetic benchmarks compared to the Titan Xp. That said, they might want to wait for official gaming benchmarks for the Tesla V100 before buying it just to test how good it does in games, particularly in 4K and 8K resolutions.
It also should be noted that there are currently no Tesla V100 cards which have monitor outputs, meaning a custom one might be needed as a special request in order to test as a GPU. All this is thanks to the 16-gigabyte (GB) of high-bandwidth memory 2 (HBM2) that has the memory bandwidth of a truly next level 900 GB/sec. This is nearly twice as fast as that of the Titan Xp at 547 GB/sec. Benchmarks for other forms of cryptocurrencies are also stellar, making the Tesla V100 the most powerful GPU currently available.
