The reviews are out for the new movie "Bright," which received a poor rating from critics who generally said that it was a lavish and expensive mess of a film.

The movie, which was directed by David Ayer, received a mediocre 30 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a site that averages review scores from various entertainment outlets. Here are what some of the reviewers had to say.

Frank Swietek from One Guy's Opinion expressed, "Coming in just under the wire for consideration as the worst movie of the year, this big-budget Netflix original [is] a mess of apocalyptic proportions, a black hole of a movie that sucks all life from the screen."

Evan Saathoff from Birth.Movies.Death. said, "In the end, this is just a boring, lazy film with no soul."

The story is set in an alternate world during the present day where humans, orcs, elves, and fairies have been living together since time immemorial. This means that creatures other than humans do the same work as everybody else. The movie follows the lives of two cops named Daryl Ward (Will Smith) and Nick Jacoby (Joel Edgerton). However, Jacoby is an orc and the first to be hired by the police department.

Later, they find out that they have to protect an elf and a forgotten relic in order to protect everyone in their location, as well as the whole world. If the elf and the relic end up in the wrong hands, it could spell the end of everything.

However, even with an intriguing premise such as this, critics didn't find the movie satisfactory. Dominick Mayer of Consequence of Sound stated, "It's the kind of film that sets up a compelling sandbox in which to play, and then smashes gracelessly through it, cackling all the while."

"Bright" is currently streaming on Netflix.
