'Breath of the Wild' sequel news, updates: Nintendo director Eiji Aonuma talks about 'Zelda' open-air system, sequels

Nintendo recently launched a new title under "The Legend of Zelda" series. "The Breath of the Wild," dubbed as an open-air title is currently available on the company's hybrid console, the Switch. The game may be relatively new, but that is not stopping Nintendo director Eiji Aonuma from talking about prospective sequels.

Open-air is the term Anouma uses to define the liberation from certain blockages or restrictions when it comes to gaming. It is a system that allows players to explore worlds seamlessly and provides gamers with several ways to progress.

The open-air concept is inspired from the 3D "Legend of Zelda" title in Ocarina of Time. In the game, players are given the freedom to explore Hyrule to their hearts content. The dungeon progression system, which is one of the features giving players expansive access, allows players to take specific routes that would eventually branch out and lead to new areas.

"At the time I thought [routes] were the right thing," Anouma admitted. "However, as we stacked on the series, 'not getting lost' would produce feelings of blockages like 'cannot do anything but that' or 'cannot run away,' so more and more people felt dissatisfied with that."

According to Aonuma, he wants to create sequels that "continue reinventing the series." He believes this can be achieved by "removing frustrations and providing surprises that exceed everyone's expectations."

The Nintendo director believes that by exceeding gamers' imaginations, "Zelda" has been received with much enthusiasm.

A "Breath of the Wild" sequel may not be released anytime soon; however, the first downloadable content (DLC) for the game will soon be available. The first expansion will be offered to those who bought the $20 add-on. The expansion will introduce a new content, new game mode, new maps, and new equipment. The DLC, which will launch later this year, will come with a new storyline and a new dungeon to explore.

"The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" is now available on Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
