It seems the 2017 reboot of "Black Mirror" from 2004 is more than just a mere modern reflection of the original, as the horror game has finally been released to polarized reception.
Website The Daily Star UK apparently found the game to be quite messy in terms of technicality, and while it's a faithful recreation of the 2004 classic, its bugs and numerous problems could prevent it from becoming a worthy reboot. Their review for the game left them wanting, and they even criticized the game for being broken. That said, they have admitted that they reviewed the game on the PlayStation 4 (PS4), which might be different from other platform versions.
Specifically, the said news website nitpicked the game's problem with its loading time issues, not only in-between the cutscenes, but also throughout the game. These were apparently unacceptable in a modern game, especially that of a reboot which aimed to improve the original's problems back then.
These issues prevented the reviewers from enjoying the selling point of the game, which was often its atmosphere and horror elements. Apart from the alleged technical issues of the game, the voice acting of its characters also felt reportedly lacking, which may have also have been detrimental to the game experience.
The Steam reviews of the game were also apparently mixed, with only 56 percent of all the 51 current reviews being positive. Multiple users have also advised others to not buy the game at its current state, meaning fans and potential players may have to wait for developers to update the game with fixes and patches to improve the overall gameplay and optimization.
"Black Mirror," same as the 2004 version, is about David Gordon investigating the sinister mystery in his ancestral mansion which has claimed the sanity of his ancestors. It is up to Gordon to find out whichever curse plagues the family home and put a stop to it once and for all.
"Black Mirror" was released on Nov. 29 and is now available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
