Fans of the "Bad Boys" movie franchise are still unsure of when the next installment will happen, but they will be glad to know that a spin-off series is being developed for television.
According to Deadline, a "Bad Boys" spin-off TV series is in the works. It will be based on a supporting character from "Bad Boys II," DEA agent Syd Burnett, played by Gabrielle Union.
Union's character will be revived for the intended TV project after more than a decade. The spin-off series is now being pitched to different television networks and has received positive interest. As such, it could only be a matter of time before of them picks up the show.
Sony Pictures and "Bad Boys" producer Jerry Bruckheimer are attached to the project. It is being written by the people who worked on "The Blacklist," Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier. The project was formed after several key ingredients became available like Union who is about to end her stint with "Being Mary Jane" next year.
This revelation of a TV spin-off is welcome news to the fans of the film franchise. At the moment, there's still no clear information on whether a third "Bad Boys" film will happen. One of the film's stars, Martin Lawrence, said that it's highly unlikely given co-star Will Smith's current schedule and movie projects lined up.
Union appeared in the sequel which was released in theaters in 2003. She played Lawrence's sister who had a secret affair with Smith, who was also an undercover DEA agent tracking down a big drug ring comprised of Russian gangsters with a Cuban drug lord.
Focusing on the character of Syd would be interesting though it might lessen or erase the possibility of Lawrence and Smith getting involved. As an actress, Union would make for a strong and likable lead, and if the project will have similar action scenes and comedic flavor as seen in the "Bad Boys" films, then it could make for a great TV series.
