The season 5 premiere of "Awkward" showed Jenna, Matty, Jake, and the rest of the group back in school as high school seniors, and it remains to be seen whether Jenna and Matty will end up together.
The episode started with the school's tradition to prank people during the first day of classes, and Jenna chose to streak through the hallways. However, while hiding in a closet, she overheard Jake and Gabby talking about how they slept together — which was revealed in season 4 — and Jenna ran out quickly and bumped into the school counselor, Val.
Shamefaced, Jenna put her clothes on and she and Val went to her office for a little back-to-school chat. The counselor had always looked after her well-being since season 1, when Jenna's accident was mistaken for a suicide attempt. And while Val talked about her cats, Jenna struggled whether to tell her about Jake and Gabby. Val told her that as a result of her prank, she's suspended for the day.
Later, Jenna and Brian went on a double date with Tamara and Adam, and it can be recalled that the latter two got engaged last season. Jenna and Tamara had to go back to school to finish the prank, and the two boys tagged along with Brian even participating by climbing the flagpole shirtless to fix some tangled undergarments hanging there.
Although Jenna had fun with Brian over the summer, she made up her mind that she's not that into him and broke up with him at the school parking lot. Later, she found out that Tamara and Adam had set a wedding date.
In the hallway, Jake confronted Gabby and told her that Matty told him that he was breaking up with her because he was still in love with Jenna. This made Gabby mad and she headed straight for Matty, breaking up with him and telling him that she slept with Jake. What followed was a fistfight between Jake and Matty and it looked like the two just reignited their feud, but this time for different reasons.
Next week, in the episode titled "Short Circuit Party," Jenna causes an accident in school with surprising results, while Matty deals with the fallout with his altercation with Jake. And now that both Jenna and Matty are single again, will they realize that they are meant to be together?
"Awkward" airs Mondays at 9/8c on MTV.
