Windows 10 release date: OS update has been codenamed 'Redstone'

Windows 10's official release date has yet to be announced by software giant Microsoft, and now, the company is already working on rolling out the next update for its unified interface operating system. The update has been codenamed Redstone, compared to Windows 10's 'Threshold' codename. According to ZDNet, the next update to supplement Windows 10 is not going to be named Windows 11, or Windows 12.

Instead, Redstone is actually going to be another part of Windows 10 and will be available to users to download and install in the form of an update. Similar to the previous operating system updates received by users via notification from the Windows Update application, Redstone will also follow the same format, even though it is going to be much larger in size compared to regular updates. Additionally, Redstone will be available in two parts. The first part will be available for users to download and install during June 2016, while the second update will be arriving in October, during the same year.

Microsoft has not given an update on how exactly Redstone is going to augment the overall user experience, but it will most likely contain features that will improve the existing unified interface. With the release of Windows 10, it appears as if Microsoft has finally started to head in the right direction. With the announcement of Surface 3 running Windows 8.1 (which will also be receiving the Windows 10 update) and by killing off its Windows RT platform, Microsoft will be looking to make amends with its upcoming operating system, which is expected to be released in Q3, 2015.

The software giant will also be releasing its flagship slate, called Surface Pro 4. The exact release date of the tablet has not been detailed by the company, but it is expected that the product is going to be announced after the release of Windows 10.
