Sony Xperia Z4 phablet release date: 6 inch handset to increase smartphone sales

Japanese tech company Sony, which is garnering revenue thanks to the sales of its next generation console, PS4, is planning on striking the smartphone industry by launching a 6 inch phablet belonging to the company's Xperia Z lineup. According to Know your mobile, the large screen smartphone is expected to be called Xperia Z4 phablet and the primary reason the company is releasing it is because it wants to increase its plummeting smartphone sales.

According to DigiTimes, Sony is aiming to ship approximately 38 million smartphones for Q2, 2015. In addition to the company's Xperia Z4 phablet and regular Xperia Z4, it will also be aiming to release the following smartphones:

  • Xperia E4, which will be made by Arima Communications
  • Xperia E4g from Compal Electronics
  • Xperia M4 Aqua from Foxconn/FIH Mobile

The last time Sony jumped in to the phablet market was when it released its Xperia Z Ultra, a powerful smartphone that featured a whopping 6.4 inch screen size with a 1080p resolution, along with a Snapdragon 800 SoC and 2 GB of RAM. Unfortunately, the company skimped out on incorporating one primary feature; the camera. While the rear camera sensor possessed a maximum image resolution of 8 megapixels, it was void of an LED flash, which made it very difficult to snap quality images in low illuminated areas.

It is expected that Sony's Xperia Z4 phablet is going to be armed with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 SoC, along with 3 GB of RAM and an Adreno 430 mobile GPU. Furthermore, the 6 inch smartphone might be rendering a 1440p resolution and thanks to its large form factor, the company might also place in a large battery that will be able to provide a higher amount of charge, despite the taxing resolution and processor. Sony will be looking to unveil its handsets at IFA 2015, which is going to kick off in September and will be taking place in Berlin, Germany.
