Snapdragon 818 and deca-core processor rumors not true

 Twitter

According to Softpedia, Qualcomm is rumored to be working on its upcoming chipset, which has been named Snapdragon 818 and is expected to feature a deca-core processor. While the rumor has not been confirmed by Qualcomm, it is possible that the company would be working on such a processor in order to take on MediaTek MT6797, which is codenamed Helio X20. Helio X20 is going to feature a 10-core processor, which is possibly the only reason why the rumor sprouted up in the first place. However, According to G For Games, an unnamed analyst has detailed on Weibo that neither a deca-core processor nor a Snapdragon 818 chipset exists.

While the analyst has not substantiated his claims, Qualcomm does seem to have trouble fending off negative critics hurling towards its flagship chipset, Snapdragon 810 and the octa-core processor present inside it. With overheating and thermal throttling issues, the leading mobile chipset maker could possibly have jeopardized future partnerships between itself and smartphone manufacturers.

Thanks to these overheating issues, the company has been forced to release several revisions of Snapdragon 810, with the latest one being v1.3 and present in Mi Note Pro. Earlier this year, Fudzilla had reported that a Qualcomm official stated that the company was not working on Snapdragon 815, and that a 14 nm FinFET Snapdragon 820 was currently in the works. With earlier rumors debunked, the odds are certainly not in the favor of Qualcomm.

Furthermore, Snapdragon 820 is going to feature an 8-core processor that will be processed on Qualcomm's Kryo architecture, so it does not seem fitting that the company will be working on a lesser performing SoC that ends up featuring more processing cores.

There are still a couple of months remaining for Qualcomm to officially announce its next-generation lineup of smartphone chipsets, so additional information will be made available to the public during the announcement.
