NVIDIA's Tegra X1 chipset, which is processed on the 20 nm process, might be seen much sooner than anticipated. There are rumors flying about that the company plans to integrate its flagship chipset into an upcoming gaming tablet, most likely be the successor to the Shield lineup, which, according to Fudzilla, just might be announced during the GPU Tech Conference 2015.

NVIDIA's X1 chipset is going to be several echelons higher than its predecessor. For one thing, the chip will possess a smaller lithographic process, which will result in superior performance delivery combined with impressive energy efficiency, not to mention unparalleled performance in mobile gaming applications.

The hardware specifications of the Tegra X1 include a 64-bit capable octa-core processor: four cores of ARM's Cortex-A57, plus four Cortex-A53 CPU. Since the Cortex-A57 CPU is the better performer out of the two, it will take care of more intensive applications, while the Cortex-A53 CPU will be handling the low level tasks. In addition, the chipset will also be armed with a graphics processor made on the Maxwell architecture.

One of the biggest advantages of having that specific GPU is that it supports Microsoft's latest API, DirectX 12. When compared to the Tegra K1, the Tegra X1 will be able to provide performance improvements that will scale up to 40 percent.

The Tegra X1 chipset gaming tablet will most likely run Google's Android Lollipop 5.0 out-of-the-box, and will have an LTE connectivity model.

The GPU Technology Conference 2015 is scheduled to take place in San Jose on March 17. Apart from the alleged gaming tablet, NVIDIA is also expected to talk about its GM204 powered dual-chip graphics card.
