Moto E 2015 vs. Lumia 640 specs comparison: Which is the better budget-smartphone buy?

During the MWC 2015, Microsoft unveiled its budget duo of Windows Mobile smartphones; the Lumia 640 and its phablet sized counterpart, the Lumia 640 XL. Aside from coming in the 3G and LTE variants, the Lumia 640 is available in different color schemes as well as being sold in the single and dual SIM models. However the biggest perk of owning the Lumia 640 is that it is going to be the recipient to Microsoft's 'unified interface' operating system, Windows 10.

The Lumia 640's screen is half an inch larger than the Moto E and features a much detailed resolution (the Lumia 640 possesses a 720p resolution while the Moto E radiates a 540p resolution). On the bright side, the Moto E is armed with a better performing chipset; the Snapdragon 410 compared to the Snapdragon 400 present on the Lumia 640. Both smartphones possess 1 GB of RAM but seeing as how Windows Mobile is the more fluid out of the two platforms, users will be facing a more enjoyable experience on the Lumia 640.

However, due to the lack of applications present on Microsoft's app store, users will not be able to take advantage of all of the smartphone's features. Since the Moto E is running Google's Lollipop 5.0 update, the company's Play Store offers an endless number of apps to take advantage of. But the department where the Lumia 640 is able to thwart the Moto E is the image taking capabilities. The Windows Mobile smartphone possesses an 8 MP rear shooter compared to the 5 MP present on the Moto E.

While megapixels are not everything when it comes to judging a smartphone's camera, it is highly unlikely that Microsoft and Motorola would have gone through the trouble in incorporating high end image snapping features to both of their offerings. The LTE dual SIM variant of the Lumia 640 will be retailing for $178 while the Moto E comes with a $150 price. Between all of the features, smartphone consumers would get a lot more if they spend the extra $28 and got themselves a budget Windows Mobile platform device.
