MediaTek MT8163 SoC might pack AMD's mobile GPU, according to benchmarking leak

The latest benchmarking report revealed by GFXbench shows that Taiwanese semiconductor company MediaTek might have incorporated AMD's mobile GPU in its MT8163 chipset. Gizchina was able to get a hold of the report and according to the details present, the SoC will possess a quad-core processor named ARM Cortex-A53. The clock speed at which the processor is running at has not been leaked but since Cortex-A53 is a lower performing CPU that is paired with a high performing one in order to complete ARM's big.LITTLE architecture requirement, it will most likely possess a lowered clock frequency.

While there was no mention of the word 'AMD' in GFXbench report, it does state that the GPU belongs to a chipmaker called Sapphire. For first impressions, it would appear that Sapphire is the sub-vendor of AMD's desktop lineup and while it can be speculated that the company will be providing the mobile GPU to MediaTek, another possibility could be that Sapphire is a completely different tech firm and in no way associated with AMD.

As for the scores that were achieved by the mysterious GPU during the benchmark, it is still unclear what these numbers mean thanks to their erratic pattern. On one hand, during the Manhattan 3.1 test, the score achieved by the GPU was sufficient enough to be on par with ARM's Mali-T760 GPU. The result could not be replicated in the T-Rex test, as the the GPU faired very poorly. Since the exact model name of the mobile GPU cannot be deduced, it is too early to make conclusions of its performance.

It should be noted that not long ago, MediaTek and AMD approached each other in order to form a partnership in which AMD would be supplying the chip making company mobile graphic processors in order to be incorporated in to the tech firm's chipsets. While there is still time for the chipset to be officially released, perhaps it will be assimilated with a better performing AMD GPU in order to deliver above-par performance.
