Tech giant Google may have halted the sale of its head wearable Google Glass, but it is rumored that the smart eyewear will be receiving a successor sometime in the near future. The search giant has stated that while it has killed off the original Google Glass, it is still committed to rolling out the next wearable when it told BBC that it will be focusing on "future versions of Glass."

Google Glass was a product that belonged to Google X, a division in Google that focuses on advancements in tech in all fields. It has now reportedly been made into a standalone project under Tony Fadell, Nest founder and formerly employed at Apple.

Earlier, Google had also put a stop to its Explorer programme. According to a Google spokesperson, as reported by Tech Crunch, the Google Glass Explorer program had existed in order get back feedback on how the technology would be used in the near future. Irrespective of the fact that Google Glass was one of the company's failures in terms of revenue generation, Google has gained sufficient feedback for it to start working on better iterations of its smart eyewear. The Explorer programme gave software developers the opportunity to purchase Google Glass for $1,500.

While the company has stated that the original Google Glass' functionality will not cease, it has not stated whether or not the device will be receiving software updates. The wearable was launched in the United States in 2013. According to Matt Burns of Techcrunch, Jan. 19 is going to be the last day to acquire the Google Glass wearable.

Google Glass 2 is expected to be showcased sometime in 2015 and the upcoming devices will be sporting Intel's chips, although both parties did not care to comment as to which chips these future smart eyewear would be assimilated with.
