Google's latest operating system update, named the Android Lollipop 5.0, packs a lnumber of features that overcome the limitations of those that were present in the company's KitKat platform. Boasting a flat, material design that consumes less system resources and boosts battery life along with a better notification system, the Lollipop 5.0 update will also be adding a more flexible feature that Android smartphone users will be able to execute through the Google Now commands.

For Android smartphone users that are running the Lollipop 5.0 update on their devices, they can execute the flashlight, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi commands by speaking the following (after toggling the Google Now feature).

  • "Turn on flashlight" (To switch on flashlight)
  • "Turn on Wi-Fi" (To activate Wi-Fi)
  • "Turn on Bluetooth" (To activate Bluetooth)

Similarly, users can also deactivate the aforementioned function of their device by saying 'off' instead of on. Furthermore, a Google Now card will be appearing with a toggle switch present on it so that individuals can change the action if they have erroneously spoken an incorrect one. Unfortunately, commands such as Airplane mode, brightness and volume are currently not compatible with the Google Now feature.

Apart from these features, Google's Lollipop 5.0 also allows users to remove bloatware according to their requirements. Previously, pre-installed applications could either be disabled or required the handset to be rooted in order to completely remove the applications from the operating system. In addition, users will also have the flexibility to install applications entirely on their SD cards. A killswitch feature allows owners to disable their devices if they misplace it or become the victim of theft.

The material design of the new update is flat in terms of its properties. The one perk that users will receive from this design is that lower system resources are consumed in order to provide a fluid operating system experience. The update was officially announced on Oct. 15, 2014.
