MediaTek Helio X20 10-core chipset to release end of 2015

MediaTek, the Taiwanese fabless semiconductor manufacturing firm, will release its high performing Helio X20 SoC by the end of 2015. The chipset will be taking on Samsung's Exynos 7420 and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810. One primary difference between the current flagship mobile chipsets and MediaTek's Helio X20 will be that the upcoming 'system on a chip' will feature a 10-core processor.

The processor's base clock frequency details are currently unavailable, but according to GizmoChina, MediaTek believes that Helio X20 will be able to obtain a 70,000+ score in the popular smartphone benchmarking program, AnTuTu.

The rumored score will place the chipset above the performance reach of Exynos 7420 and Snapdragon 810, which are yet to break the 70,000 point mark. Currently, only NVIDIA's Tegra X1 SoC has been able to project a score of 74,977, which is a record that has yet to be broken by any chipset. MediaTek has been making waves with its mobile products such as MT6752, which has been incorporated in to affordable smartphones such as Lenovo K3 Note (retails for $145 and can beat OnePlus One's Snapdragon 801) and Elephone's P7000.

In addition, the company is well known for incorporating its low powered, low performing SoCs in mobile products that carry a budget friendly price tag. MediaTek will not be shifting its focus on the high-end market, but it plans to branch out to several segments of the mobile industry, which includes wearables and the 'Internet of Things'.

It is expected that mass production of Helio X20 will commence by the end of 2015, which means that the first handsets sporting the prowess of the mobile chipset might not show until the first quarter of 2016. If MediaTek is able to keep costs low, then it will put both Samsung and Qualcomm in a tight spot.
