Nintendo NX to be an addition to console line-up

Satoru Iwata, president of NintendoWikipedia

Early this year, Nintendo announced that the company is currently working on a new console platform dubbed the NX. According to the company president, Satoru Iwata, the NX system is a new concept that the company is currently delving into.

Iwata said, "As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename 'NX'. It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project."

Recently, Nintendo also announced that since the upcoming system is still in development, the company will not be making any other details available, particularly for the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo. This year's E3 event will start on June 16 and will end on June 18.

The Nintendo chief maintains that the E3 is an event to showcase video games, thus Nintendo will focus on their upcoming game titles.

It might sound a bit early for Nintendo to announce a new project, only to keep mum about it. However, Iwata maintains that the announcement is one strategy that Nintendo hopes will help maintain interest in the company.

However, rumors are circulating that perhaps, the new NX platform, being a new concept, will replace Nintendo's current platform systems, particularly the Wii U and 3DS.

In a recent investor briefing, Iwata said that even if the NX platform is a brand new concept, it is not meant to supplant current consoles. Fans of the Wii U and 3DS can take a breather, as the NX platform system is only meant to augment and expand Nintendo's current flagship consoles.

The Nintendo chief then added that the NX is meant to bridge the gap between the company's console titles and mobile gaming, which Nintendo is also exploring through a partnership with mobile game giant DeNA.
