The third season of "Tokyo Ghoul" is expected to premiere sometime this year, but at this point, there still appear to be quite a few stumbling blocks that could change that.
First off, it's worth noting that numerous signs point to the third season of the series making its way to air this year, and the best pieces of evidence in support of this notion are the words of FUNimation Entertainment CEO and president Gen Fukunaga.
According to Fukunaga, season 3 of "Tokyo Ghoul" will be coming out this year, and considering his position, it would seem that his words have a discernible degree of value in this matter.
Fukunaga has also indicated that a mobile game based on "Tokyo Ghoul" is in development, Moviepilot reported. If that is the case, then that is a strong sign of the company's dedication to making the show a success, hence making the production of a third season a priority.
With FUNimation onboard, it certainly seems like a third season of the show making its way to air this year is all but assured, but there are some people who may not want that to happen, and surprisingly enough, those folks are self-identified fans of "Tokyo Ghoul."
As of now there are petitions on both iPetition and Change.org that are asking for a reboot of the "Tokyo Ghoul" anime. The two petitions have varying levels of support, MNR Daily reported, with the former garnering already over 2,000 signatures and the latter trailing that significantly at right around 200.
According to the fans who are in support of these petitions, the anime as it stands now is deviating too much from the manga, and that is not what they want. With enough support, these fans are hoping that a reboot of the "Tokyo Ghoul" anime will eventually be made.
It's unclear just how significant a segment of the show's fan base is actually seeking a reboot, but as it is now, it's big enough to gain notice.
In the end, the only thing that may actually prevent a third season of "Tokyo Ghoul" from making it to TV in 2016 is the call to reboot from some fans.
