Nintendo NX release date: New console on track for a 2016 launch

Nintendo's NX console is a big bundle of mystery for now, but it may not remain that way for too long.

The latest rumors regarding the console are now suggesting a sooner than expected release date, with the distinct possibility that it could even come out in time for next year.

According to Yibada, work on the new console has already begun. If things go according to plan, rumors also suggest that the NX console could be released sometime in the second half of next year.

While Nintendo has yet to provide an official release date for their new console, a 2016 launch would indeed make sense for the company. With the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One still active and the Wii U being a disappointment thus far, launching a new console next year could finally allow Nintendo to claim the spotlight for itself and subsequently put their new offering in a better position to succeed.

Nintendo has a lot riding on the success of the NX console given how sales of the Wii U have fallen short of expectations to this point.

In light of that, the company is reportedly pulling out all the stops in order to deliver a new console that lives up to expectations.

The NX will reportedly sport new gaming tech that has been absent in consoles currently in the market, and it is also expected to work well both as a handheld and as a conventional console.

There's also a belief that the NX console will be distinctly different from the Wii U, thus allowing it to establish itself without having to completely overshadow another Nintendo offering.

According to Nintendo Insider, the gaming company will not be revealing any information about the new console until next year at the earliest.

Time will tell if that official news will be what people are looking for, or if the NX will end up as yet another disappointment.
