Nexus 5 release date 2013: Android 4.4 KitKat seen running in leaked video of Google device? [specs, features]

Apple's iPhone 5S smartphones already have backlogged pre-orders and now we await just one more launch of a major smartphone device - Google's Nexus 5.

The probably LG-assembled Nexus 5 is up next and Google has been tight-lipped about when and what we can expect but according to the latest rumors, Android fans can keep their eyes on October 14 if they want to get their hands on one, although October 31 has also been mentioned as a possible release date.

Speculation about its impending arrival was only reinforced when the Nexus 4 recently came off the Google Play Store.

A mid to late October release date would mean it comes with the latest version of Android, the Android 4.4 KitKat.

A recently leaked document from the Federal Communications Commission, the wing of the US government charged with regulating telecommunications, pointed to a phone that could support a 4.96-inch screen.

Consumers have become increasingly demanding about the quality of their phone cameras so it's reasonable to expect improvements in this area, not to mention that it would be wise given the competition from the Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5S.  The rumor surrounding the Nexus 5 camera is that it will be 13 megapixels.

The Nexus 4 was a huge hit with consumers - so huge Google and LG couldn't keep up with demand - and the reason for its success was the combination of great power and good price.  If they can accomplish the same with the Nexus 5, they're onto a winner.

Amazingly, the world got a sneak peak it really ought not to have after a prototype was accidentally left in a bar.  Because of the security PIN, it couldn't be unlocked so the internal features are still a mystery.

But the footage, which was leaked via 9to5Google, added weight to the 5-inch display rumor and appeared to show it running on Android 4.4 KitKat.

Other rumored specs include 2GB or 3GB of RAM, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor chip, a 1080x1920 display made using Corning Gorilla Glass 3 technology, and a 2,700 mAh battery.
