Apple may be going with a different chipset choice for the MacBook Air 2016.

Over the past few months, one of the most persistent rumors concerning the laptop has suggested that it will ultimately end up with Intel's brand of Skylake chipsets when it eventually does come out. It would seem to be a logical choice for the company, given how well regarded Intel's chipsets have been, but that no longer appears to be the case.

According to Yibada, Apple is now shifting gears and has decided to utilize their own products instead. If the rumor holds true, then the MacBook Air 2016 will likely feature Apple's A10X chipsets instead of the aforementioned Skylake products.

Aside from the A10X processor, the rumored laptop is also expected to be thinner than its predecessor when it is officially launched. The laptop will also reportedly feature improved battery life as well as the Force Touch technology that is now present in numerous Apple products.

While rumors have continued to paint a picture of what the MacBook Air 2016 will ultimately be like when it is officially launched, there is now a question as to whether or not the next release will actually be the last one for the series, the Australian Network News reported.

Apple has yet to officially address what the ultimate fate of the MacBook Air line will be, though some have suggested that the silence is actually a bad thing.

The MacBook Air has previously been an essential part of Apple's vast array of offerings and yet the laptop has remained absent. The inactivity regarding the MacBook Air is also being seen as part of Apple's efforts to push their iPad Pro even further, and that may indeed end up being the device that takes the place of the laptop should it be phased out.
