'Final Fantasy 7' remake news: 2017 release date possible

"Final Fantasy VII" Square-Enix

Ever since being announced at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) event, the "Final Fantasy 7" remake has been the subject of tons of speculation, with its release date in particular being a popular topic.

Beyond actually saying that they are working on a "Final Fantasy 7" remake, Square Enix has not actually officially revealed much of anything else when it comes to the game.

This has prompted some fans to wonder about when the remake might arrive, and the rumors suggest that it could be a while.

According to iDigital Times, Square Enix is currently focused mainly on "Final Fantasy XV," giving them little to no time to work on anything else. On top of that, "Final Fantasy XV" has already been set back further than expected, and there's no confirmation yet that it will finally be launched by next year.

All of this is to say that "Final Fantasy XV's" delayed timeline can only work to set the "Final Fantasy 7" remake back even further.

Adding to the list of reasons for why the remake might not be due anytime soon are the many changes that Square Enix apparently has in store.

The remake's director, Tetsuya Nomura, has already revealed that numerous changes are in store for the game, ranging from minor tweaks to possibly more significant ones such as its battle mechanics, Yibada reported. The original "Final Fantasy 7" featured a turn-based battle system and that could be changed in favor of a new one that integrates more action into gameplay.

Despite the numerous changes planned, Nomura has still promised that the remake will still stay true to the original. With that kind of balancing act being attempted, it could be a while before any favorable iteration of the "Final Fantasy 7" remake could emerge.

There's no clear indicator for when the "Final Fantasy 7" remake might be launched, but anything earlier than 2017 at this point would appear to be a genuine surprise.
