A police officer, known as a student resource officer at a Utah school, is being hailed for saving two lives in a single day, giving CPR to a student and helping a choking baby on his way home.

According to the Washington County School District in St. George, the incident happened at Dixie Middle School on Friday.

Student resource officer Matt Schuman has been with Dixie Middle School since the start of the 2015-2016 school year.

At around 2 p.m. at Dixie Middle School, a female student told her teacher that she was not feeling well in gym class. She was told to rest in front of the front office-nurse's room and call her parents.

Schuman stayed with her until her parents arrived. The student displayed flu-like symptoms and vomited.

When the father arrived and spoke with the administration and Schuman, she collapsed on her knees. Her father said she would take her to a clinic, but Schuman was not convinced and felt something was wrong.

Schuman said he would call an ambulance and the father agreed.

When the father went to place her things in his truck, the student collapsed and Schuman caught her before she hit the ground.

The student went into a seizure and cardiac arrest, losing pulse and had difficulty breathing.

Schuman and parent Denim Lyman began CPR on the student. Schuman continued the CPR for two minutes and revived her. But the student went into cardiac arrest again. Schuman continued the CPR until the EMT services arrived.

She was rushed to a hospital in Las Vegas.

"It is due to the heroic efforts and proficient training that we thank Officer Shuman for his quick thinking and fast response," the school district said.

Later in the day, Schuman was heading home when he overheard on his police scanner a 911 dispatch call about a nine-day-old infant choking.

Schuman proceeded to the house and began to remove the obstruction in the child's airway. He saved the baby's life as EMTs arrived and continued care.
