'True Detective' Season 3 Air Date, Cast: Matthew McConaughey up for a return to the TV series

Matthew McConaughey as Rustin Cohle in "True Detective" season 1 HBO

The American anthology crime drama "True Detective" was an instant hit when it was aired on TV for the first time from January to March 2014. A second season came the year after, with mixed reviews but still decent ratings.

Because of its star-studded cast and gripping storylines, fans are eager to see if "True Detective" will indeed return for a third season. Well, here's some good news for the show's avid viewers: one of the original cast members, Matthew McConaughey, has already expressed willingness to give the series another shot.

In a recent interview on "The Rich Eisen Show," the Academy Award-winning actor said he has already reached out to "True Detective" showrunner Nic Pizzolato and told him that he is ready to join the show's third season.

"I would. I actually talked to Nic about it. It would be the right context, the right way. That thing, when I read it, I knew in 20 minutes, I was like, if I can play this guy Rustin Cohle, I'm in," McConaughey said in his interview, referring to his character in "True Detective" Season 1.

The actor admitted that one of the factors why he is willing to go back to the show is the fact that he enjoyed filming the first season of "True Detective."

"I miss Rust Cohle, man. I miss watching him on Sunday nights. I miss watching 'True Detective' on Sunday nights. I was a happy man when I made that for six months because I was on my own island. Luckily my wife put up with me. She said I was actually nice when I went home," he said.

As for the air date for "True Detective" Season 3, HBO has yet to set a definite schedule, but Variety has already reported that the network has already enlisted the services of Pizzolato until 2018, so there are still two years for the next season to be written and filmed for its loyal audience.
