Today, Mother Teresa was made a saint by Pope Francis. He presided over her canonisation in Rome after a second miracle was attributed to her intervention last year.

The Vatican said the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and the Pope had recognised that a Brazilian man with multiple brain tumours was miraculously healed in 2008 after prayers for the intercession of Mother Teresa. She died in 1997 and has been on the "fast track" to sainthood since her beatification in 2003.

Known for a life of service to the poor, Mother Teresa won the Nobel Peace Prize for her mission in the slums of Mumbai and famously advocated for a Christianity that showed the love of Christ through practically serving the most vulnerable in society.
