Pokémon-themed 2DS handhelds set to be launched in Japan

 Pokémon Japan

Pokémon fans have some new collectibles to look forward to as redesigned 2DS handhelds based on the popular anime and video game series are set to be launched in Japan.

All four of the new handhelds will be released in Japan on Feb. 27, 2016 which, as IGN notes is a special date for the popular franchise. As Pokémon fans will know, the said date is significant mainly because it also happens to be the 20th anniversary of "Pokémon Red" and "Pokémon Blue's" release date.

The four 2DS handhelds will come in colors of red, blue, green, and yellow. The colors themselves are also significant because they will represent what games will be pre-installed onto them. The red 2DS will feature a pre-installed copy of "Pokémon Red;" the blue unit will include "Pokémon Blue;" the green system will have "Pokémon Green;" and the yellow unit will have "Pokémon Yellow" ready right away.

Aside from the new Pokémon-themed 2DS units, buyers will also be receiving a few extra goodies for their purchases, GameSpot reported.

For example, players will be able to receive special stickers for purchasing the new 2DS units and they will even get a region map poster for the specific Pokémon game they are playing.

Players who get the new Pokémon-themed 2DS handhelds will also receive a download code for Mew. The code can be used for the 2DS game itself or for some of the newer Pokémon games such as "Alpha Sapphire" and "Omega Ruby."

For now at least, there's no word yet on whether or not the new Pokémon-themed 2DS handhelds will be making their way to other regions outside of Japan. Fans outside of Japan simply have no choice for now other than to wait and hope that the new Pokémon-themed 2DS handhelds will be made available outside of the country eventually.
