PlayStation VR news: New headset expected to sell 1.9 million units in 2016

The PlayStation VR is poised to have a productive 2016, at least according to some projections.

One firm in particular, with that being SuperData, suggests that around 1.9 million units of the PlayStation VR may be sold in 2016, IGN reported.

That figure may actually seem low when compared to the estimated total of 6.6 million units sold between the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. It's worth noting however, that the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive are primarily for the PC, while the PlayStation VR would be most appealing to the console gamers of the world.

Overall, 2016 is expected to be big year for virtual reality, at least according to SuperData. The firm even predicts that virtual reality may account for as much as $5.1 billion in sales in 2016 alone.

That figure is then expected to rise to an estimated $8.9 billion in 2017 before climbing up all the way up to $12.3 billion by the end of 2018.

Pricing will obviously play a huge part into those lofty projections becoming a reality, and SuperData also has a prediction for that.

As reported on by Gamespot, the firm currently expects the PlayStation VR to be priced at somewhere between $400 to $600 upon its debut. If the projected price of the PlayStation VR seems to be a bit high, it's worth noting that the price of the Oculus Rift is currently set at $600.

Sony has yet to announce the actual price of the PlayStation VR, though PlayStation executive Andrew House has previously mentioned that the new headset would be priced similarly to a gaming console.

Whether or not House's comments end up being accurate depends on where the price settles at in relation to SuperData's projection.

The low end of SuperData's price projection for the PlayStation VR would be right in line with the costs of current gen consoles.

The PlayStation VR is expected to be launched some time during the first half of the year.
