There has been more speculation about Miley Cyrus's engagement to Liam Hemsworth after she walked the red carpet alone at the MTV VMAs.

The "We Can't Stop" singer has been engaged to the Australian actor since May last year but there have been reports of troubles in their relationship and earlier this year, Miley was without her engagement ring for a while as rumors swirled about whether Liam cheated on her.

Rumors of troubles between the two have resurfaced after the couple appeared awkward together at the Paranoia premiere.

The premiere on August 8 was also the last time the couple were spotted together.

Then there was his absence from the VMAs, with Miley walking down the red carpet with her producer and posing solo for photos.

Her performance with Robin Thicke during the awards was greeted with a storm of criticism and revulsion but Liam has remained silent on it.

When it comes to their engagement, the latest reports are that it is still very much on.

One insider told Hollywoodlife.com that the couple "fight a lot" but that marrying the actor is "still what Miley wants" and "she's totally in love with Liam".

The insider says the distance is a "huge problem" for them and that the couple have had "trust issues since the start".

"There's no way around it, they have to be apart because of their jobs," the friend said.  "It just comes with the territory, and they're still figuring out how to deal with that".
