'GTA 6' release date not for a while due to many complicating factors

"Grand Theft Auto 6" might not be coming out for a while, and there are some good reasons for why that may be the case.

First off, it's worth noting that the currently active game from the franchise, "Grand Theft Auto 5," is not doing badly itself.

During a recent earnings briefing, Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed that "GTA Online," the multiplayer component of "Grand Theft Auto 5" has been doing very well. Even though Zelnick failed to provide specific numbers that would give a more accurate indicator of how well the game is doing, the CEO's confidence in the title is telling.

Rockstar has also continued to provide new content for the game, even recently releasing a Valentine's Day update. At this point, it seems as though Rockstar is still fully invested in "Grand Theft Auto 5," and that could have an impact on "Grand Theft Auto 6's" timeline.

Another factor that may be pushing back "Grand Theft Auto 6's" timeline is the recent departure of Rockstar North studio head Leslie Benzies, as reported by Kotaku back in January.

Rockstar North has been heavily involved in the development of numerous "Grand Theft Auto" titles, and it would seem that a departure of such a prominent figure from the studio could have an impact on its short and long-term plans, which may very well include "Grand Theft Auto 6."

One last reason for why "Grand Theft Auto 6" may not be released for a while is because some of the platforms that will be hosting it are not yet available.

As Value Walk pointed out, with rumors that both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Two will feature 4K visuals, Rockstar may be better served to hold off on releasing "Grand Theft Auto 6" until the new technology becomes available.

Given all the factors in play, Rockstar may not be able to release "Grand Theft Auto 6" for a while, even though fans may not mind as much for as long as the upcoming game continues to live up to the franchise's lofty standards.
