Coleco Chameleon release date: New cartridge-based console coming early 2016

The Coleco Chameleon is set to re-introduce cartridges back into the world of gaming.

The new cartridge-based console is looking to give older fans good doses of nostaliga while also showing younger players what gaming was like decades ago.

People who will get the Coleco Chameleon will be able to play a variety of games as the console provides support for 8-, 16- and 32-bit titles.

This means that players may soon be able to experience older titles such as "Donkey Kong" and "Frogger" in all their retro glory, according to Screen Rant. On top of providing support for older titles, the Coleco Chameleon is also expected to have new games made specifically for it, although even the newer releases will feature the retro graphics.

There's no word yet on who will be making the newer games, so folks interested in the Coleco Chameleon will simply have to stay updated.

It's also worth noting that Coleco is associated with the new console only in name, according to GameSpot.

The company that owns the rights to the Coleco brand has simply partnered up with Retro Video Game Systems to bring the new console to life.

This new console is also not the first time that Retro Video Game Systems attempted to re-introduce cartridge-based gaming back into mainstream consumption.

An earlier version of the Coleco Chameleon was in the works previously, although it ultimately never made it to the market after an unsuccessful crowdfunding effort.

Time will tell if the company's second attempt at re-packaging retro gaming will be more successful.

As of now, the actual price of the Coleco Chameleon is still unknown, so interested buyers will want to keep an eye out for that bit of news sometime in the near future.

The Coleco Chameleon is currently being prepared for an early 2016 launch.
