Chelsea transfer news: Competition for Didier Drogba; decision due on Romelu Lukaku

Didier Drogba is reportedly on the cusp of signing a new one-year contract with Chelsea following a stint at Galatasaray.

The Ivory Coast striker's 18-month contract with the Istanbul club wound down at the end of the Turkish Superlig season.

Now he's free to make a move and the reports in French newspaper L'Equipe are that the 36-year-old is heading for the Blues as Jose Mourinho gets his squad in shape to make a serious Premier League challenge.

The Guardian reports that Drogba will be offered a coaching position once the yearlong contract with Chelsea comes to an end.

Drogba's arrival would be timely as the club just announced a few days ago that Demba Ba is leaving for Besiktas.

It will be a return to familiar territory for Drogba if he does head back to Stamford Bridge, having been signed previously by Mourinho in 2004.  He went on to enjoy a fruitful eight years with Chelsea, scoring 157 goals and winning three Premier League titles.

Mourinho will no doubt be hoping Drogba brings some of that goal-scoring legacy back to the club as it looks to draw a line in the sand from the disappointment of last season.

Meanwhile, it's a waiting game for Romelu Lukaku as his future with the club looks set to be decided in the next fortnight.

He's been on loan at West Brom and Everton the last two seasons and now it looks like his absence from the club might become permanent.

However, if he does leave the Blues, he won't be clubless as Everton are reportedly keen to have him join their side and Sky Sports reports Bundesliga club Wolfsburg have been linked to a £20m bid for the 21-year-old.

With just a few weeks to go before the Premier League gets underway, the new Chelsea line-up is taking shape with the completed transfers of Cesc Fabregas (£30m from Barcelona), Diego Costa (£32m from Atletico Madrid) and Mario Pasalic (from Hadjuk Split for an undisclosed amount).
