With its penultimate season just about to wrap up, "Bones" is already promising to give its fans more treats and excitement in its 12th and final season scheduled to air in 2017.

In an interview with TV Guide, the show's executive producer, Michael Peterson, talked about how the crime procedural drama will move to "darker territory" as it ends its current season and moves to the next one.

The team of forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan, the show's main character, will experience a bigger menace never seen before, according to Peterson.

He even hinted that the new villain will be worse than the show's previous bad guy, Christopher Pelant, who haunted the show's protagonists for three seasons.

"Pelant started off as a hacktivist character and was smarter than [a lot] of people combined. This will be a little more terrifying of a character," he said. "Pelant, as crazy as he was, had a logic to him.

"This is going into a darker territory than we have traditionally handled on Bones. It's less of a thriller and more of a horror element to it than there was with Pelant. It's going to represent a different kind of danger," Peterson added.

This new character is expected to mess up the minds of the show's characters and viewers alike, the "Bones" boss said.

"It's going to have a profound effect. It is different than other [cases]. It really is going to psychologically mess with a lot of the characters," Peterson said.

In a separate interview with TV Line, Peterson also confirmed that the show's runners are planning to bring back a familiar face in its final season: fan favorite Zack Addy, played by Eric Millegan.

"It seems like the right thing to do," the executive producer explained. "I will say this: I know what the fans want, and as much of a roller coaster ride as we may put them through, we want to deliver.

"I watched the show before I was ever writing on the show, and I think what Eric brought to that character was fantastic," he added. "I'll make a promise to try really hard to make it happen."
