'Battlefield 5' release date: New game in development

 "Battlefield Hardline" official website

DICE has now officially announced that "Battlefield 5" is currently in development.

The announcement came from the Twitter account of DICE development director Dan Vaderlind, IGN reported. In the tweet, Vaderlind simply stated that he has moved on to the next "Battlefield" project after previously working on "Star Wars: Battlefront."

Interestingly enough, rumors of a new "Battlefield" game being in the works actually began to trickle out well before Vaderlind's Twitter confirmation.

Recently, Reddit user Anarkipt pointed to a listing of a new "Battlefield" game appearing in of all places, IMDb, Game Zone reported.

The listing seemingly hinted at some of the details that will be included in "Battlefield 5."

For instance, the listing suggested that the new game will focus on a soldier in Japan fighting to make it back home.

The listing also named some of the people who will, apparently, be part of the upcoming game. If the IMDb listing is to be believed, then "Battlefield 5" will be directed and written by Tyler James and it will also feature Anton Pavel, Henry Steven Pavel, and Alex Yu as potential members of the game's cast.

Names of some of the characters who could be included in the game were also part of the listing.

The IMDb listing also suggested that the next game would be officially known as "Battlefield 5: Armageddon."

For what it's worth, DICE has yet to confirm the validity of the IMDb listing, although it does contain one particular detail that is in line with the recent announcement regarding the game.

EA has already indicated that they are targeting a 2016 holiday release date for "Battlefield 5," and upon looking at the listing, it reveals that "Battlefield 5: Armageddon" is due out on Nov. 23, 2016.

It's unclear if that bit of information was just a product of coincidence or if the IMDb listing actually reveals official details about "Battlefield 5."
