Xiaomi Mi 7 release date, specs news update: Leaked render shows a notch display with under-screen fingerprint sensor

The Chinese tech manufacturer, Xiaomi, has yet to confirm the details regarding the arrival of its 2018 flagship smartphone model, the Mi 7. Nevertheless, the public is already expecting the Xiaomi Mi 7 to launch soon, given that its predecessor was released almost a year ago. It's a good thing that a new leaked render of the Mi 7 has surfaced, showing what the premium device could offer. The most noticeable part of the leak is that the Xiaomi Mi 7 will sport a notch display.

According to the latest reports, the Xiaomi Mi 7 will boast an all-new design that looks different from that of 2017's Mi 6 smartphone. This is due to the notch area on the top portion of the display, akin to the appearance of the iPhone X. There is still uncertainty if Xiaomi will be the next firm to jump on the notch bandwagon. Knowing that many other manufacturers have seemed to cave in to this trend, seeing the Xiaomi Mi 7 with a notch will not be surprising.

With the inclusion of the notch in the Xiaomi Mi 7, it is expected that the front-facing image sensor will be placed on it. It is likely that this sensor is built for a facial recognition feature, just like the iPhone X's Face ID system. Interestingly, the leaked Mi 7 render suggests that the handset will not only rely on face unlock for authentication, as there seems to be an in-display fingerprint sensor embedded right under the screen.

The Xiaomi Mi 7's in-idisplay fingerprint reader is consistent with the recent report from XDA Developers that the handset will include some sort of an optical biometric scanner. XDA Developers was able to obtain the firmware files that are rumored to be intended for the upcoming Xiaomi smartphone.

There are some clues pointing to the in-display fingerprint sensor in a Xiaomi device with codename "dipperold." Although, it is possible that this feature will be present in the new Xiaomi Mi 7 Plus, and not in the regular-sized variant.

Other features of the Xiaomi Mi 7 as seen in the leaked image are the dual rear camera that has almost similar design as the Mi MIX 2S's camera module. It is strange, however, that the render shows the Mi 7 with a metal back instead of glass, given that the Mi lineup has already started using glass material at the rear since the Mi 5.

Moreover, there are now doubts if the Xiaomi Mi 7 will get wireless charging capabilities, especially if the handset does not use a glass or ceramic back.
