The Wayward Pines series which is based on a bestselling novel of the same name, decided to tread its own path in Season 2 by creating a slighty different storyline. Based on a science fiction rendering of human evolution the show depits how humans evolve into Abbes.

The last episode of the previous season in particular left viewers with a lot of questions to stirr their imagination. As the last scenes showed an Abbey leaving the town with an offspring resembling a human baby, it was suggested that like humans, Abbes too were evolving. Into what? Now, that is a question the next season could answer.

Another central issue that thes eason 3 would explore if it is to come to air is that of morality. As human society evolves and the walls of societal norms and moral codes are torn down and ethical boundaries pushed to the limits, what kind of a social complex would the world embody? Would people reach a point where they don't need morals to guide them anymore or would the realisation dawn upon them that the very morals that their species disregarded were the crucial basis of their survival and progress?

Meanwhile, Blake Crouch, the author of the Wayward Pines sci-fi book pointed out that not only is the last scene from season 2 the core of the whole drama and thrill in season 3, the pospects of what kind of a world the cryogenically frozen species will wake up to are quite fascinating. He also remarked that man as an intelligent species is often aware of the grim realities of the survival of his species and hence it is all the more fun to experiment with the idea of human extinction.

Though many expect the show to return to screens sometime in May 2017, executive producer  M. Night Shyamalan did not clearly state whether or not there will be a season 3 but hinted at the fact the series is actually conceived by its makers as a three season story and so given an opportunity to go for another season, that would be enough to wrap up the act.
